Paul Randal’s wait-statistics-or-please-tell-me-where-it-hurts


One of the best posts you can find on internet about the “waits and queues” Troubleshooting methodology is Paul Randal’s “wait-statistics-or-please-tell-me-where-it-hurts”. I check it very often and whenever you google a waittype you are most likely to get the link to his post in the top ten. In his post Paul provides a modified version of Glenn Berry’s query for waitstats. The query is extremely useful to collect information when troubleshooting a performance issue on a Server. One thing I have been missing in the query is the description of the waittypes, many times after running the query I end up searching for the waittype on the internet. One place where you can find plenty of definitions on waittypes is MSDN, the page about sys.dm_os_wait_stats provides the definition to 342 different waittypes. Sometimes the information in that page is not enough and you may end up searching a bit more, but it is at least a good start.

I decide to add the waittype description field to the query in Paul’s blog, the result is a long (more than 300 lines) query, which will provide the description of the waittype. You can find the query below:

  1. PREEMPTIVE_OS_FILEOPS? Very difficult type to find information on. 3.66% on one of my instances, and very high over 5 hour period on a production instance, according to Solarwinds DPA. Puzzling. Any ideas as the script doesn’t include or exclude it and MS info isn’t much use (neither is DPA’s).

      A good explanation of what are Preemptive waittypes can be found on SQLAuthority blog. I also fount this msdn link which explains that the SQLOS is waiting for file system operation to complete. If I was in your position I will check my Windows eventlogs, to see if the system is reporting something. Please keep me posted and let me know if I can be of some help. I will be updating the script soon.
